The best example of this is probably the hallmark of steampunk transportation: the airship. Some Steampunk contraptions never got the spotlight in our timeline of history, but Steampunk culture gives them the center stage. These Steampunk steam-powered “cars” include Gurney carriages-like the ones in our own world-or they can be something entirely strange and implausible. These steam-powered cars and trains manifest themselves in the Steampunk world. The world’s first practical automobile to run on gasoline wouldn’t come along until 1885, toward the end of the Victorian era, when Karl Benz introduced his gasoline-fueled car. The first steam-powered automobile designed for roads was built in 1801 by Richard Trevithick. The first “cars” were steam-powered, too. The steam moves different parts of machinery that work in rhythm to move the train forward. These locomotives get their fuel by burning combustible materials like coal, wood, and oil to produce steam. The first steam-powered locomotives originated in Great Britain at the dawn of the 19th Century. When traveling in a Steampunk world, you should anticipate significant differences from our own ways of traveling.īut not all Steampunk transportation is necessarily fictional some Steampunk transportation contraptions may strike you as relatively familiar, since our own history includes a series of steam-powered vehicles from the early 19th century, specifically steam-powered trains and cars. The author of Steampunk Prime, Mike Ashley, says that Steampunk is “the idea that perhaps the Victorians got it right and that we do live in a world of airships.” Steam power These classic science-fiction novels play a big role in Steampunk culture and literature, but it’s important to note that Victorian-age novels were not Steampunk in itself but rather a large source of inspiration for the Steampunk movement that was to come a century later. These writers include Jules Verne, author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and H.G. Second, before it was a full-flown sub-culture phenomenon, Steampunk started as a sub-genre of science fiction in the 1970s, and its inspiration takes from 19th century Victorian writers. The movement “reaches directly into the pocket of Victorian England and predicts what the world would be like today had its inhabitants and inventors prevailed over modern technology.” 2 The origin of Steampunk is debatable it’s difficult to know exactly where the first Steampunk authors drew their inspiration from, but a couple of things are known fact.įirst, Steampunk inspiration comes from the Victorian Age, from 1837 to 1901. These sub-genres include Pirate, Victorian, American West, Dystopian, and many others. There are many different “veins” of Steampunk culture that have been written about, sampled in film, or enacted and imagined in modern-day fandom culture. Most Steampunk culture bases its aesthetic and narrative on machinery from the 19th century. More specifically, Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. Steampunk may be defined as “where history and fantasy collide with technology.” 1

The outside string lights are so pretty but when we want to sit in the hot tub at night and enjoy the darkness they were a bit annoying and we had to hunt for the plugs to turn them off though we couldn’t unplug all of them. One is for the island lights, one for the porch light and one for the very bright spotlight that is so bright it lights up the upstairs bedroom even with the blinds drawn. There is a row if three behind the fridge. The most challenging thing was finding all the light switches. The cabin itself has a lovely layout but I would like to comment on a couple things that would have been helpful to know. This one is set up against the forest and that led to a very quiet peaceful trip. Over the years we have stayed at several and would/have return to each of them if they are available when we need one. We love our stays at the Comfy Cabins we have visited. Despite not being tested for COVID-19, the coroner determined that the likely underlying cause of death was COVID–19 given her symptoms and exposure to an infected individual. It was reported that the woman had typical COVID-19 symptoms five days prior to suffering an ischemic stroke at home. The US CDC guidelines also make this clear with an example: the death of an 86-year-old female with an unconfirmed case of COVID–19. In some circumstances, depending on national guidelines, medical practitioners can record COVID-19 deaths if they think the signs and symptoms point towards this as the underlying cause. This means a positive COVID-19 test result is not required for a death to be registered as COVID-19. In the circumstances of there being no swab, it is satisfactory to apply clinical judgement.” In the UK guidelines, for example, it makes clear that practitioners should complete death certificates to the best of their knowledge, stating that “if before death the patient had symptoms typical of COVID-19 infection, but the test result has not been received, it would be satisfactory to give ‘COVID-19’ as the cause of death, and then share the test result when it becomes available. 4Īlthough confirmed cases are reliant on a positive laboratory confirmation of the COVID-19 test, a laboratory diagnosis may not be required for it to be listed as the cause of death. Even when it’s the underlying and not the direct cause, COVID-19 should be listed. In some cases, COVID-19 may be the underlying cause of death, having led to complications such as pneumonia or ARDS. 3īoth guidelines state that if the practitioner suspects that COVID-19 played a role in an individual’s death it should be specified on the death certificate. Here is the US CDC’s Vital Statistics Reporting Guidance here is the UK Government guidance. Both provide very similar guidelines for medical practitioners on the completion of death certificates. Let’s take a look at two concrete examples of national guidance: the United States and the UK. 2 However, countries also typically provide their own guidance to practitioners on how and when COVID-19 deaths should be recorded. So, how are deaths from COVID-19 recorded? What is and isn’t included in these totals?Īs is standard in death reporting, countries are asked to follow the ‘cause of death’ classifications from the WHO’s International Classification of Diseases guidelines. This is also true in the case of COVID-19: the disease can lead to other health problems such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Health problems are often connected, and multiplicative, meaning an underlying condition can often lead to complications which ultimately result in death. The attribution of deaths to specific causes can be challenging under any circumstances. → We provide more detail on these three points in the section ‘ Deaths from COVID-19: background‘. Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day – irrespectively of any actual variation of deaths – it is helpful to view the seven-day rolling average of the daily figures as we do in the chart here.
Atmospheric water is modeled by FlightGear ranging from state changes such as condensing into cloud or haze layers, along with energy provided from latent heat to drive convective fluid flow, through to precipitation as rain droplets, snow, or hail. They range from turbulence on different scales to, individual thermals, thunderstorms, through to moving air layers, and depicting air-masses on the scale of thousands of kilometers. FlightGear models the continuously evolving life-cycle of phenomena on various scales, driven by interaction of fluid with terrain. FlightGear is able to model different surface characteristics such as heating or cooling, and the exchange of heat and moisture with the atmosphere depending on factors like windflow or dew point. Craft also experience varying gravitational force based on the 3d shape of the potential well and the non-spherical shape of the Earth.Ītmospheric & Environmental Physics įlightGear can simulate the atmosphere ranging from energy inputs/outputs to the system, like energy from the sun or volcanic sources, through to fluid flow on various scales and changes of state. Forces experienced at any point along a flight path, therefore, are the result of complicated atmospheric processes on varying spatial scales, and complex flow along the craft's surface. The aircraft surface interaction works with the same dynamics, but on a limited range of scales. The atmosphere-terrain boundary interaction follows fluid dynamics, just with processes on hugely varying scales and 'weather' is the planetary boundary layer. Fluid behaviour is often characterised by eddies (Videos: aircraft, terrain) or vortices on varying scales down to the microscopic, but is harder to observe as the air is clear except for moisture phase changes like condensation trails or clouds. Simulator Features Physics įorces experienced by a flying aircraft depend on the time-varying state of atmospheric fluid flow along the flight path - the atmosphere being a fluid that can exchange energy, exchange moisture or particles, change phase or other state, and exert force with boundaries formed by surfaces. The FlightGear project has been nominated by SourceForge, and subsequently chosen as project of the month by the community, in 2015, 2017, and 2019. FlightGear's source code is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License and is free and open-source software. Around that time, the graphical front end "FlightGear Launch Control", also known as "FGRun", was replaced by a hard-coded Qt launcher. The project moved to a regular release cadence with 2-4 releases per year since 2016, with the first version under the new naming scheme being "2016.1". įlightGear reached 1.0 in 2007, 2.0 in 2010, and there were 9 major releases under 2.x and 3.x labels, with the final one under the previous numbering scheme being "3.4", since "3.6" was cancelled. By 1999 FlightGear had replaced LaRCsim with JSBSim built to the sims' needs, and in 2015 NASA used JSBSim alongside 6 other space industry standards to create a measuring stick to judge future space industry simulation code. The first working binaries using OpenGL came out in 1997. FlightGear incorporated other open-source resources, including the LaRCsim flight dynamics engine from NASA, and freely available elevation data. Development of an OpenGL based version was spearheaded by Curtis Olson starting in 1997. The flight simulator was created using custom 3D graphics code. He was dissatisfied with proprietary, available, simulators like the Microsoft Flight Simulator, citing motivations of companies not aligning with the simulators' players ("simmers"), and proposed a new flight simulator developed by volunteers over the Internet. Its flight dynamics engine ( JSBSim) is used in a 2015 NASA benchmark to judge new simulation code to the standards of the space industry.įlightGear started as an online proposal in 1996 by David Murr, living in the United States.
